Reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated and quite premature! I’ve simply been enjoying a short ‘hiatus’ (Good word, Look it up!) from the band for the last couple of weeks or four, so I’ll now try to get back to it.

Raza, how ‘alluring’ and ‘dulcet’ (Good words, look ‘em up!) do my words have to be to make you respond favorably when I ask, “I know you lent me a bunch of money and I just don’t know what happened to it, but can you let me have a few billion more dollars to tide me over for awhile…?” “I think I squandered it but I’m not sure…” Would words in that ‘vernacular’ (Good word, look it up!) convince you to lend me a lot of money… again? What if I ‘grovel’ (Good word, look it up!) and say ‘Puleeezzzz?’?
Horale Raza, Por Hay Biene El Huracan Ike! Get all your stuff together and get ready to vacate the ‘premises’ (Good word, look it up!)! Put out the dog and bring in the cat! If you don’t intend to leave your home, go out and buy you one of those gasoline generators for when the lights go out! Stock up on Cerveza and Chicharrones, and if you have money left over, some candles and water! Let’s see, the last few times the weather people have warned us of an ‘impending’ (Good word, look it up!) disaster from a hurricane, we didn’t get one solitary drop of rain! Remember Raza, professional weather ‘prognosticators’ (folks that are paid to guess at the weather) are just people that wanted to be doctors but flunked Medical school! And ‘conversely’ (Good word, look it up!), Doctors (folks that are paid to guess at your health) are just glorified weathermen that got lucky! Don’t ask me how I know, I just know. Anyway, if you live near the Texas Coast, you should probably be concerned about hurricanes. The rest of us should just take step outside every now and then to see what’s happening! Or, you can do like me and the Revolution Gorillas and head for Kansas City! No’ombre, Shaddop!

Let’s see Raza, where did I leave off? Apologies, but I’ve been a bit ‘under the weather’, so let me see……..Oh yeah, it was the ‘Cruces, Burque’ weekend! Well, a few days before that weekend, my Compadres, my wife and I got together and decided we’d all pile into compadres’ Cadillac and drive out to New Mexico, have a good time and just share in the vehicle/gasoline expenses. Since they live in San Anto and we’re in Austin, we drove to their place and piled our chincherillo into their Caddy and with Compadre Raul at the wheel, departed from there.

Eternal Optimists. When I think about it, Musicians, and especially ‘Tejano’ musicians, are ‘eternal optimists’! Last week, after spending several minutes in hot sticky weather getting my pickup truck all loaded up with my guitar, keyboards, lyrics book, music stand and bag containing all my cords, I headed in the direction of Guero’s Taco Bar and Cantina for Los Flame’s regular Wednesday evening gig. And like I said, it was hot, it was humid and the sun was shining. I was driving north on South Lamar, when a sudden downpour of rain (what else?..) hit my windshield and forced me to slow down and put my wipers on high! It poured down until I got to about one block from Guero’s, and then, the rain just stopped. I arrived at Guero’s, parked, greeted the rest of the band, then just waited to see if the gig was still on. And though it was ‘tentatively’ ‘on’ at the time, about 10 minutes before we set up, we were informed that the gig was cancelled due to the weather patterns on TV of the ‘residual’ (Good word, look it up!) rainfall from Hurricane Dolly, 300 miles south.
